Gettin' Our Read On

... or more like "Gettin' Our Bookcase On", but that really didn't sound very snazzy. Kinda dorky. But then again, we are dorks, so it fits.

Anyways, like you saw in yesterday's office updates post, our home office has come a long way - from this dark scratchy/rough paneled wood room (full of junk and clutter)....

To this much more clean, light, and airy one. Ahhh. We can relax so much easier in here, now! (and now we actually make an effort to keep it nice and clean, haha!)

Now, you might have noticed a bookcase in our "before" photo, on the left side of the first picture.

Tom's parents were nice enough to let us borrow this bookcase for a few years when we needed one, but once we painted the room it just didn't seem to fit in anymore. Luckily, they then had the perfect spot for it in their own home, so back to it's original owners it went!

Meanwhile, we needed a bookcase in the office. Because, well, we like books. And reading. And before we both got some new fancy-schmancy e-readers (we <3 our Kindles, by-the-way) for Christmas, we had lots of regular ole' fashioned paper books, many of which Tom needed (and still needs) for medical school. Eventually our plan is to convert over to e-books almost completely, except for certain books and volumes that we like better in paper, but we just love our Kindles so much and the ease of buying/storing e-books (much less clutter, too), that eventually we'll go that way almost completely. But for now..

Well, we need a bookcase. And so the hunt began.

After searching bookcases on quite a few sites, we finally found two we loved at Target, and after some serious thought and reading a few hundred reviews (seriously), we decided upon this easy-to-setup folding bookcase.

Seriously - you just take it out of the box and unfold it, and tadaa - you've got yourself a new bookcase. No assembly required, thankyouverymuch. Ahh, I love things that are easy! (why can't home improvement be this easy?!)

Did you spy our personalized eye chart? (go here for more info!)

It fits perfectly on the bookcase and helps to visually break up all the books we have on there.

The new bookcase also fits perfectly in the spot between the reading chair in the corner, and the doorframe.

It just makes me want to snuggle up and read a good book... while Tom is busy studying for school, haha!

All-in-all, we're really enjoying and loving our new office, and half the time can't even believe it's the same dark and wooden den-like space it was before - and we can't wait to share what we've been up to in the closet, either! So stay tuned for that exciting update!

Is a bookcase a must-have for you, too? What's your stance on the whole e-readers versus paper books debate? Would you ever consider going paper book-less?

  1. We have a similar bookshelf in a dark brown and after 3 years, it's still awesome. From being a side table in our room, to where it currently lives on the stairs going down to our basement (as a back-up pantry), I love that thing!

Congrats on your bookshelf and love the new look of the room!

  2. I could never go bookless. I think the little reader things are cool, and I'd be interested in them for some things, but my Mark Twain needs to be a big fat book.

Honestly, that room is an amazing transformation.

  4. Great makeover, Chelsea! I'm not too sure about an e-reader replacing the feel and smell of a book...but then, I'm getting older and a little less eager to embrace new technology! :)
