The Garage Evolution

Our garage has gone through many phases in the past year we've lived in our house.

First, for about 13 months it served as storage for random things while we remodeled the house.

Yes, that is a dead plant on top of the dresser. Don't ask.

Then we organized it in preparation for a garage sale.

Then we sold nearly everything during our Ginormous Garage Sale (click here for tips), and our garage was, for the first time since we moved in, mostly empty.

After some more organizing, we were left with 4 boxes from the Garage Sale. Considering that we started with a whole garage full of them - floor to ceiling - we didn't do too bad during our weekend sale!

On Saturday we loaded them up in the car...

And made a trip to our local Salvation Army Donation Center and dropped them off. It was our first time donating things, and it was super-easy! We just pulled up around the back of the store and rang a bell, and a couple people came out to help us unload (which I was very thankful for because I had thrown out my back the night before). They gave us a receipt for tax purposes, and we were done!

And guess what?

MY CAR IS NOW IN THE GARAGE!

Oh happy day! You have NO IDEA how excited I am!! I can finally park in the garage and use the garage like it's intended to be used! Whoo-Hoo!

Granted, we still have some organizing and stuff to do (details to come later) since our garage is super-tiny, but being able to park in the garage everyday so far is incredible! I'm sure I'll be even more thankful that we cleaned out the garage come winter when I won't have to freeze my butt off outside in heels in 20 degree weather scraping ice off my windshield for 30 minutes.

So there's a little history on our garage, and how we slowly cleaned it out over the course of a couple months. And now we get to reap the rewards! What do you think? Do you have any suggestions or tips for organizing our garage? Anything that's really helped you get your own space in order or is useful? We'd love to hear any tips or suggestions you might have!

  1. Woo hoo! I'm pretty dang jealous right now that you can park your car in your garage. And that you have a garage that isn't ready to fall over at any minute! And nice job on the garage sales. I can't believe you'd never donated items before! I'm constantly going through stuff and taking it to the DI (the Utah version of SA)- I don't know what I'd do without it!

  3. I don't have any tips, because our garage was cleaned out earlier this year and I now have to park on the street again. SIGH

  4. Nice!!!!! The inside of my car looks like the inside of your garage at phase 1. I haven't been home since I moved to school, so it is packed with boxes and lots of wedding stuff I've been collecting.

  6. I can sympathize with the tiny garage - ours is only meant to house one car, but is currently overflowing with Craigslist finds (not yet ready for their debut) and tools for our remodeling projects. Someday I hope Scott's company car can stay in there (since it's the nicest) - my "granny" car is pitiful and no amount of pampering it in the garage will help. Congrats on reclaiming yours!

  9. Isn't it a great feeling to get the car in the garage???? Way to go!!!! We just try and keep the perimeter as neat as possible, doesn't always stay that way, but we try not to encroach on the car parking area.

  10. Yay for clean garages! Just today I got rid of my sisters couch that I was storing in mine and I returned a trailer to my parents house. I can now FINALLY park in there again!

I know I say it all the time, but I love your blog!
