Quick N Easy Dollar Store Decor

We always find ourselves doing alot of little home improvements during our larger home improvement endeavors. I don't know why we feel the need to get the little things done during a time of great stress and work, but I think it might have to do with getting something done and making us feel like we have indeed made some sort of progress somewhere in the house. So sometime between trying to figure out the next step in our kitchen countertop project and performing CPR on the lawn, I tackled a bird.

Okay, not literally - but I finally got around to spray painting this ugly little duckling I found at the dollar store.

After 1 coat:

After 2 coats:

After 3 coats:

And roundabouts 4 coats and 30 cents of spray paint later:

Much better! He is now happily living on our living room coffee table.

It had been awhile since I'd spray painted anything (the last things I spray painted were two huge dressers in college in 30 mph Oklahoma wind - not a good experience.) and I had totally forgot how quick and easy it was. Have you spray painted anything lately? It really makes such a difference and took me all of a few minutes spread out over an hour or two, it makes me wonder why I didn't do it sooner!

And yes, it definitely made me feel better about being stuck in a rut on the countertop project.

Linking up to The Thrifty Home's Penny Pinching Party.

  1. It looks great! Awesome idea - I love how glossy it looks now!

  2. We do the same thing with small projects in the middle of big ones. Heck, sometimes it's even two big projects...or three, at the same time.

That bird looks great! It's amazing what spray paint can do. It's a running joke with my neighbors to see what I'll be spray painting next.

  3. I love that idea, it looks like a ceramic bird now! Lovely

  4. Chelsea...loving your blog (discovered you from Jen and Sunny's blogs). You've done so much already. great work!!! I just became a follower so that I can keep up with you.
I just started a blog myself.

  5. Aw, thanks guys! It's great to have other blogs and readers to keep our spirits up and keep us motivated. :)

  6. haha yes Oklahoma wind + spray paint is not a good combination. I painted some lamp bases, picture frames and a few owl figurines for my office last fall. I am not very patient with spray paint though!

  7. Have I spray painted anything lately? Are you kidding? My kids are afraid to take naps, the keys are sticking to my primer-covered fingers as I type, and as Heather from Our Life in a Click knows, I have outdoor wicker in experimental colors dotting my lawn...

But I can quit anytime I want. Really.

  8. Funny enough, I just had a disasterous spray paint experience. I bought unfinished wood boxes, sanded them, spray-primed them, and then tried to spray paint but the paint just ran down and made drip marks, and was generally blotchy and gross. I think the temperature was too low and I didn't let the primer dry well enough first. BOO! So now I have to sand it all again and start over. Your birdie is lovely, though!

  9. I LOVE IT! It looks the bird in my office!
