We're BAAAA-AAACK

Did you miss us? We sure missed you guys! It's funny how blogging has become such a part of our lives now (although I admit that it's more a part of mine than Tom's, haha!), that it was strange to take a break from writing posts everyday.

Although we still took a truckload of pictures for you guys, so that didn't change at all!

Before my parents arrived, we cleaned and scrubbed and mopped (Not the laminate wood flooring! Just the tiles.) to get ready for their arrival. I love having houseguests because although it's a lot of work, it's big-time motivation to get any lingering home improvements done (like sprucing up our guest bathroom) and to clean the house like crazy!

They arrived late on Thursday night and relaxed and got settled in on Friday while we were at work. Then on Saturday the fun began!

We went to the Nebraska Husker and Texas game, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Boy, were things crazy there! We had a fabulous time - the atmosphere there was electric. For the past few years Nebraska has continued to lose to Texas, time and time again.

And last year. Oh boy. Last year Nebraska had the winning points on the board when time ran out, and as people began celebrating (Husker fans have wanted to beat Texas for a REALLY long time!) there was a flag thrown on the field. After discussion, the refs decided that some rule had been broken (why they didn't throw the flag earlier in the play is beyond me), and they changed the :00 seconds on the clock to :01. They added ONE second. In that second, Texas scored a field goal - and won the game.

Husker fans were NOT HAPPY. So. There's a bit of a rivalry between the two teams (and fans, haha) and Saturday's game was the last time the two would play in the foreseeable future because Nebraska is changing conferences. So the fans really REALLY wanted to win. It was crazy. There were balloons and people walking around with corncobs on their heads, red and white striped overalls (I think those ghastly stripes are still burned into my retinas), and shirts of all sorts of colorful sayings and proclamations. There were the noises of the crowd screaming and cheering and the announcer booming and the people selling popcorn and soda walking down the aisles yelling "POPCORN! PIZZA!"; the smells of pizza and hotdogs (and sometimes of the old man sitting in front of you... boy, was he GASY! Ugh..); the wind whipping our hair around and blowing in our face and the sun on our backs as it was a perfectly beautiful day; and the feeling in the air - the EXCITEMENT. You could just FEEL IT. Oh, it was great.

If only the actual game had been better. Both teams played poorly, and Texas played marginally better. The Huskers lost, mostly because of a bad case of butterfingers. Seriously, there were about 4 or 5 touchdown-passes that the receiver CAUGHT and then the ball just slipped out of his fingers. I watched him juggle it around a few times as he tried to catch it.

Sigh. Can you tell I wasn't too pleased?

Oh well, it was still fun to go and watch the game for the atmosphere (that's what I keep telling myself, anyways).

On Sunday we visited the zoo. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is one of the Top 3 Zoos in the country. Not too bad, eh? So far Omaha is known for 1) it's Zoo. and 2). the Omaha Steaks. Yes, I'm making a list (it's helpful when talking to non-Nebraskans to let them know that yes, really, there ARE people in Nebraska that aren't farmers, and there are a couple things in Omaha is known for. Seriously. A couple. Like, 2. )

Anyways, the zoo is pretty sweet, and I took TONS of pictures. We spent about 7 hours at the zoo and probably only saw 60% of it! We figure we'll have to go back next time to see what we missed. I love that you can tell that all the animals are really loved and cared for, and it makes me happy to see them in incredible environments (they don't really resemble cages much at all) that are perfectly suited for each species. Pretty cool, indeed. And of course, I was fascinated - and a little shutter-happy.

So that's our little long recap of the weekend. We also made some SERIOUS headway in the home improvement department.. like, we-still-can't-believe-we-did-this-it's-totally-awesome headway! You guys are.gonna.love.it. Seriously.

So - did you miss us? Are you huge football/Huskers fans like we are (or maybe even Texas fans)? Any fond zoo memories or cool zoos you've been to? Any favorite photos from our zoo trip (I have quite a few!)?

  6. I had no idea you were a Nebraska fan. I know we are friends and all, and I hope this doesn't ruin our friendship, but I am a HUGE Texas fan. HUGE. My husband graduated from UT and we live in Austin.
